Before James Gunn's Superman Movie was released there was a whole rumor going around that the movie would feature monkeys on computers trolling Superman's social media, sparking much outrage. #supersh*t.
I didn't know this was even a thing until just prior to writing this article. I did a search to see if anyone had posted a clip of the monkeys scene from the movie and got pages of discourse featuring videos and articles prior to the film. Most of it from Gunn detractors (let's say) seeing it as some kind of childish swipe at them... well not them specifically but, you know, those other people who have every right to hate on anything sight unseen.
Anyway, I'm not going to give even one such example a link or air because it's kind of sad watching someone devote so much commentary to a throw away gag that is absolutely a nod to James Gunn's Superman trolls.
The whole reason this post exists, is to say I loved the joke, because fourteen years ago, and I'm not saying James Gunn even saw this, or that it was even all that original back then, I made a very bad animation using GoAnimate (now Vyond) where one thousand monkeys using computers were used by an evil villain in an attempt to game social media.
At the time, GoAnimate had a license for Underdog cartoons, so my villain was Simon Sinister, and my monkeys were Rashy, the sock monkey, from Paul Dini's Super Rica and Rashy Cartoon (another license GoAnimate had).
Watch the animation below, which features another internet meme from back in the day. Regardless of why James included the joke, I think it's a cool idea, and perfectly fits within any super villain's bag of tricks!
Episode 1 How to Get Views the Evil Genius Way
If you would like to read more about the animation and it's influences and sequels I wrote a post in my Animation and Video Life Blog back when I made it titled, How to Get Views on GoAnimate the Evil Genius Way.
