Multiculturalism, Muslims and Australian Immigration

Err... yeah... you guys are not helping.
Image: The Muslim Brotherhood wants to Rule the World.
Recently a friend sent me (and a number of others on their email list) the following chain email, that has been circulating around Australian email boxes, asking for my opinion on the message.

Just before you read it I'll pre-warn you that it relates to immigration laws and ideas that I'm sure many countries are grappling with in this post 911 world.

I've reproduced the email as closely as I can to how I received it, complete with large typeface. Have a read and then read my response. The email is titled 'Go the Dutch'. The comment in red is by the last person to forward the email to my friend.

About time the Australian government did the same......why do we suck up to these people whose "values" are from beyond the dark ages ,who still live the way they did 2000 years ago.

Go the Dutch - but why wait until 2013?

The Netherlands, where six per cent of the population is now Muslim, is scrapping multiculturalism:

The Dutch government says it will abandon the long-standing model of multiculturalism that has encouraged Muslim immigrants to create a parallel society within the Netherlands.

A new integration bill, which Dutch Interior Minister Piet Hein Donner presented to parliament on June 16, reads:
"The government shares the social dissatisfaction over the multicultural society model and plans to shift priority to the values of the Dutch people.

In the new integration system, the values of the Dutch society play a central role.

With this change, the government steps away from the model of a multicultural society.

The letter continues:

"A more obligatory integration is justified because the government also demands that from its own citizens. It is necessary because otherwise the society gradually grows apart and eventually no one feels at home anymore in the Netherlands...

The new integration policy will place more demands on immigrants. For example, immigrants will be required to learn the Dutch language, and the government will take a tougher approach to immigrants who ignore Dutch values or disobey Dutch law.

The government will also stop offering special subsidies for Muslim immigrants because, according to Donner;

"It is not the government's job to integrate immigrants." (How bloody true).

The government will introduce new legislation that outlaws forced marriages and will also impose tougher measures against Muslim immigrants who lower their chances of employment by the way they dress.

More specifically, the government will impose a ban on face-covering, Islamic burqas as of January 1, 2013.(Why wait 11 months?)

Holland has done that whole liberal thing, and realised - maybe too late - that creating a nation of tribes will kill the nation itself.

Australia's future may well be read here.

READERS NOTE:

Muslim immigrants leave their countries of birth because of civil and political unrest "CREATED BY THE VERY NATURE OF THEIR CULTURE."

Countries like Holland and Australia have an established way of life that actually works, so why embrace the unworkable?

If Muslims do not wish to accept another culture, the answer is simple; "STAY WHERE YOU ARE!!"

This gives a whole new meaning to the term; 'Dutch Courage' -  Unfortunately Australian politicians don't have the ... guts to do the same.

There's a whole lot of truth here!!!!

Before you read my response, think about your own response. Do you agree with the message? Is this the kind of response to you'd like to see implemented and if so, why?

My response:

Hi [Name withheld],

Since you asked, put me down for 100% against the policies and ideas of the message.

The message isn't about scrapping multiculturalism it's about being anti Muslim and is based entirely upon fear and ignorance. Fear and Ignorance of the Muslim culture as well as ignorance of other cultures and religions that create their own communities in Australia, in much the same way as Muslim's do but with less of the divisive rhetoric from so called 'Australians'.

Australia has Greek, Italian, Chinese, Indian, Christian, Catholic, Buddhist and Islamic communities as well as communities from many other nations and religions. All of which make our country  richer for their involvement. Australia, over the last few decades, strives to be inclusive and understanding of other cultures and religions yet too many 'Australians' seem to want to implement archaic polices (such as those in the message you sent) more suited to the 1950s than 2012.

If 6% of the Netherlands identify themselves as Muslim then that's a 0.5% increase since 2002... hardly a growing threat to the overall Dutch population.

Over the last few decades Australia has also seen a visible increase in Australian Patriotism. Ironically reinforced by our involvement in wars (ANZACs, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq for example) rather than our successes as nation in something more positive like strengthening our ties with countries in the region and around the world. The Australian spirit, values and way of life has never been stronger than it is today. Multiculturalism is not a threat to our way of life, it is our way of life and has been since the country was first settled.

If these so called Australians truly wanted integration of other nationalities and religions, they would make the effort to welcome these people to our shores and share with them what it means to be Australian, whilst learning something about those who can only aspire to one day live in the 'lucky country'.

The above makes it seem like I did some research but most of it is just my observations over the last few years. The only part I researched was to look up Muslim populations in the Netherlands back in 2002 just to see if there really had been any kind of dramatic increase to warrant their government's concern.

Anyone with a basic knowledge of Australian history will know that Australia has always been 'Multicultural' - even before European settlement with a mix of both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. European settlement was mostly a mix of British and Irish. The Chinese started immigrating here as far back as 1851 when gold was discovered at Bathurst. - who, incidentally, had to put up with similar prejudices that Muslim's face today (though ironically it was their reputation as good workers that seemed to be the main contention).

Beyond that, look at all the German, Greek and Italian history. In the region I live there are historic wineries established by German immigrants, not to mention extensive Welsh mining history as well.

If you'd like to do your own research MDAA's web site has a good starter page that looks at cultural statistics since Australian settlement: Anglo-Australian General Information.

From the above link, I'll leave you with this...
European descendants make up 95% of Australia's inhabitants. The majority have a British or Irish heritage, but about 18% of the population have other European origins. While Australia's ethnic make-up is relatively small, it is one of the most culturally diverse populations in the world.
There's some interesting further reading of early Australian history at these two links:

  1. That's a fantastic response.

I'd say the same about Canada if anyone passed such a thing here. Boggles my mind.

With that said, I don't believe in bending too much to other cultures. Example: Canada considered passing Sharia law for Muslims. There are certain elements of that that would counteract our fundamental belief in freedom and gender equality.

    1. Hmmm... I guess if laws like that got through you'd hope people would have the right to opt out in some way. Not that I've thought that through as an idea.

The main thing is that people make informed choices about different cultures rather than base their decisions on the behavior of minorities within a culture and media sensationalism of extreme ideas.

    2. Adjustment versus Racism
I never thought of myself as racist whilst I was growing up, in fact I used to wonder why people couldn’t just live wherever they wanted. Now the world is changing and we live in a so called multicultural society. This has resulted in a lot of uncertainty and sadness for those who relocate as well as the native citizens of countries that have now become multicultural.
We often focus on racism aimed at new arrivals that miss their homeland, family, friends and cultural norms. The new arrivals may try to adapt to their new home by imposing changes in the new country so that they feel more at home. Then when the native citizens object the new arrivals call them racist.
What people fail to see is that the native citizens are experiencing a sense of loss. They see the world they knew being turned upside down as laws are changed, foreign schools and places of worship are assembled; new cuisines, religions and values are forced upon them to ensure the new arrivals fit in. The native citizens are told they must adapt and learn to be culturally sensitive, whilst they watch their world change. If they grieve for their loss, they are called racist.
I guess I am now racist, because I am having a hard time accepting all these changes that are being forced upon me by people who chose to come and live in my native land. Sadly I feel that I have no choice in the matter and nowhere to call home.
We like cultures that are not forced upon us and allow us to keep our identity.

  2. Jane I feel as you do. I'm a baby boomer and a 7th gen. aussie. My family now has 9 generations in australia. My heart breaks to see the energy of my free and honest country becoming grubbier and more repugnant with each passing year due to a range of changes. Things like more dishonesty in politics, corporate domination and greed, filth and gratuitous violence in films and media, especially Hollywood made, and now with immigrants who are selfish, greedy, immature and dangerous. The 'landscape' of Oz has been altered to the degree that is unacceptable to me. I long for the days when I felt safe to live and work and socialize in western Sydney. Now I don't go to Muslim occupied suburbs. The politicians are to blame. They have destroyed what was once pure and beautiful. Shame on them all.

  3. Actually it's a great idea. I would love to start a business in a supermarket. It will broaden my product's market. Muslim Entrepreneurship and business is a perfect platform to do so. Isn't it?

How to Transfer Any Line Art to Your Griptape - Easy Skateboard Griptape Art Tutorial

Dog Star Griptape Art by TET Griptape art is once again gaining popularity amongst modern skateboarders. For those of us who have tried to create our own griptape art, using paint pens, you'll know reproducing your design onto the grip, without making any mistakes is incredibly challenging. Mostly because you just have to go for it and draw the design freehand, with paint pens, directly onto the griptape. You can make the odd mistake here or there but if you get the proportions of the design completely wrong, it can be very difficult to fix. Often you just have to live with the mistake. To address the problem I've come up with an easy way anyone can transfer a line art design to their griptape, removing almost all the anxiety of getting the proportions wrong. In fact, you could do this with any line art design, even if you have no drawing skill at all. Watch the video below to see my technique in action and/or skip past the video where I highlight the basic steps to get your de

Skateboard Trick Tips: Two Ways to Ollie North (Ollie One foot)

You have to be quick to see my Ollie Norths! Ollie One Foots, otherwise known as the Ollie North, is one of those skateboard tricks you learn and then tend not to do very much as more interesting trick challenges grab your attention. However it does look really cool if you learn how to kick your front foot well past the nose of your skateboard. Still shot from Braille Skateboarding's Ollie North tutorial. I was inspired to make my video below, showing two different techniques to achieve a successful Ollie One Foot, when I not only saw that Braille Skateboarding's Tutorial used a different method to the one I had learned but also, when I looked at various other video tutorials, I discovered yet another technique, with no one using the method I had originally learned. Braille's method is to simply Ollie and drag your front foot past the front of your board. The second method I came across in several video tutorials is to Ollie, drag your front foot and tap your

Are Ion Thrusters the Future of Flying Cars? Spoiler - Probably Not But... Hover Boards... Maybe?

Undefined Technologies Ion Propulsion Drone prototype 3D concept image. You may have heard of Ion engines or, more likely, Ion thrusters. NASA uses them on their spacecraft to help maintain a craft's position or to propel them through space.  Upon hearing that you might think they're big, powerful engines, but actually they are not. They work well in the vacuum of space but, once any kind of atmosphere and gravity is involved they'd be hard pressed to launch you off the ground if you strapped four of them to your lawn chair and yelled "up, up, and away!" I am no expert on Ion thrusters - they're basically magic that science has an explanation for. If you want to know the details, The Space Techie website has a layman's explanation .  Build Your Own Ion Thruster Earth based Ion Thrusters work a bit different to their  space based cousins by Ionizing the same air that we breathe to create thrust (an effect known as Ionic-wind ).  While they sound highly soph

Book Review: Brand It Purple by Ashley Knoote-Parke

Ashley Knoote-Parke. Image: Facebook It seems almost redundant to review  Brand It Purple  given you probably won't find a hard copy edition without digging into the second hand market. The book's author and publisher, Ashley Knoote-Parke, seemingly, disappeared off the face of the Earth around about 2015. Which is a story in itself. However, the book is still a very informative guide and, while not specifically targeted at women, many may relate more to a book written by an experienced female entrepreneur. Brand It Purple is a personal marketing and branding guide released in 2009 by then, star on the rise author, Ashley Knoote-Parke, an English born, South African expatriate, who made Adelaide, South Australia her home. There she started her own publishing company releasing a photographic, coffee table book of South Australian sights, along with books showcasing female, then male, entrepreneurs. As well she published 'Brand It Purple'. I came across the b

Movie Review: Force of Nature - The Dry 2 (2024) *No Spoilers*

Eric Bana returns as Detective Aaron Falk in Force of Nature - The Dry 2 , and that's the only real connection between this and 2020's  The Dry . This is an all new mystery set in a new location. I will say, given that it's either wet or rainy, with the incoming threat of a major storm for most of the movie, the filmmakers really missed a trick in not renaming the film, The Wet. Back when I reviewed the first film I noted that I would love to see the second book made into a movie too, and here it is. This time Aaron and his detective partner, Carmen (Jacqueline Mackenzie), head into the mountains to investigate the whereabouts of a missing informant, who disappears on a workplace, team bonding retreat. All the performances in this film are easily on par with the first, though I do think some pretty outstanding actors really didn't have a lot to do here. In terms of mystery the first movie was better constructed as a who dunnit film you could play along with. Here you mo

Nobody move, I've dropped my brain!

I'm probably one of the last Pirates of the Caribbean fans to see At World's End which is still playing at a few cinemas as it nears the end of its run. The title of this post, which is a quote from the movie, aptly describes the difficulties of trying to get your head around the plot. Although it does continue from the previous film in the series (all the characters are there) it doesn't seem critical to know the back story. The main plot is established right at the start. The East India Trading Company is out to wipe out pirates and anyone that so much as glances at a pirate. Our motley crew, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swan and Captain Barbossa join forces to bring together the Brethren of Nine pieces of eight (nine pirate lords who can unite all pirates) and stop the massacre of their kind. Slight problem. Captain Jack Sparrow is one of the nine and he died in the last film. Since Captain Barbossa died in the film before that, we know that coming back from the dead isn'
