| "Who's the GOAT?" by TET 2026 Original Acrylic Painting on Canvas (40 x 50cm). Buy My Original Artwork or High Quality Prints (ArtPal Store) Prints Available here. (RedBubble Store) |
About a month and a half ago I first wrote about the inspiration for my latest whimsical art cat, Who is the GOAT?, in my post, TET Artwork Diary: Cats, Goats, and Battlestar Galactica's Cylon, Number Six. That particular post covers where the idea came from and the challenges I had sketching the final composition. Worth a read, if you haven't already, to get the full story of this artwork.
This post I'm mostly going to cover the behind the scenes of actually painting the artwork and, of course, give you the links to where you can buy the original or high quality prints.
Rather than go into any great detail on my painting process, which I've talked about numerous times in many of my videos, I'm just going to focus on a few key highlights unique to this work.
First, if you have an eye for detail, you may have noticed right away the goat (that's the goat 'GOAT' not the cat 'GOAT') is standing in the same direction as the cat, where as, in the sketch, the goat's body was turned the other way.

| Work in Progress photos of Who's the Goat? Note that in the pencil sketch image the goat's body is facing the other way. Also, at one point, the cat had dark stripes and was not as fluffy. |
This change in the direction of the goat's body came about because after I had sketched the cat and the goat's head onto my canvas (with red paint) I realized there wasn't enough room to fit the goat's body in as per the sketch. The goat's tail and hind legs would have disappeared behind the cat. So I did my best to change the sketch 'on the fly' as I drew it onto the canvas in paint.
It's not ideal, but the composition still works, and now your eye is drawn up from the cat's tail, to the goat's tail, which then sends you back to the goat's eyes... which send you to the cat's eye's and the circle continues.
The final color scheme remains true to the inspiration photos from my photos in the previous post, green, blues, yellows, greys, black, and white - with a bit of red and pink thrown in.
You may notice in the work in progress photos that, at one point, my cat had very dark stripes and wasn't looking very fluffy. This occurred because the original cat does have some light tortoise shell cat style markings on its head. I was trying to give my cat similar markings, extended out to the whole body but it turned my cat into a more smooth, alien like cat. Not really what I was going for.
I actually wanted a more fluffy cat, like the real cat, but 'fluffy' cats isn't something I've painted a lot, so I wasn't really sure how to do that, and keep the style of the cat looking like my style of cat.
Fortunately I managed to work it out, and am very satisfied that the cat now looks closer to my vision for how I thought it should look.
This is one of the most challenging pieces I've painted to date. I think it may be the first ever where I've used white paint to 'erase' my red sketch lines on the canvas (usually I'll just leave mistakes but this time it was causing me some confusion over where the edge of the goat was).
I love how the finished piece turned out and think it would certainly be an ideal image to share with your 'Alpha pussy' friends (a phrase coined by Marc Maron in Too Real Netflix Special - click the link to see a clip). Maybe that's another angle on this painting... who is the 'Alpha' and who is the 'Alpha pussy'?
Personally I see it as an artwork for anyone who likes to question the world around them, who know that two different things can sometimes be the same.
Buy this Original Artwork or High Quality Prints (ArtPal Store), as well Prints are available through my RedBubble store. Including as a jigsaw of up to 1000 pieces (choose a smaller number of pieces if you prefer). I personally love having a jigsaw on the go, and it's a great way to enjoy your favorite art if you don't have space to hang it on the wall (or maybe it doesn't quite fit your aesthetic).
