Roary the Racing Car is Evil

Well okay maybe the lovable little red racing car, that has his own TV show, Roary the Racing Car, isn't evil but I do suspect he's into brain washing. Subliminally teaching everyone his life lessons.

How else do you explain a fully grown adult, namely me, waking up in the morning from a dream about Roary? Before your mind begins to wander, it's nothing even remotely perverse (or maybe it is, depending on how you look at things), my dream was simply playing out like a typical episode of Roary the Racing Car.

Perhaps we should back up a bit. In your best 'Big Chris' voice say "Come on Roary!"

This all starts because I do my daily work out routine watching Judge Judy. Exercise is as boring as hell (oh dear, coarse language) so I watch TV whilst I go through my routine. At 3pm the most intelligent show on the box is, you guessed it, Judge Judy.

Her show is only 30 minutes long and my routine is an hour so at 3:30pm I need something else to watch.

Channel flipping (keeping in mind I only have four channels available on my studio TV), Huey's Cooking Adventures just doesn't cut it for me. Sorry Huey, watching you cook is like dialing for pizza that never comes. The dialing isn't the best part of a pizza. Watching someone cook isn't the best part of eating food.

Hi5 is no good either. No matter how good those five teens look (if in fact they are teens?) they still make me want to stab my eyes out with a pencil!

Then there's some New Zealand, Time Travel, Sci-Fi series, Time Trackers, featuring obnoxious teens running everything. It's badly acted, with naff special effects and manages to make Hi5 look like top notch TV. (Maybe I'm being harsh? It's just that I like time travel as basis for a TV show but, from the ten minutes I tried to watch, the kids made me want to stab my eyes out with a pencil!).

This leaves Roary the Racing car followed by several other short format kids shows, such as Maisy, Curious George, Pepper Pig and The Mr Men Show. What is the world coming to when Roary is the most intelligent thing on TV?

The trouble with Roary is his show has a catchy theme tune. Not surprising when you consider this show is from the same studio that gave us Bob the Builder ...can we fix it! Roary's theme tune may well hit the under age dance floors yet. If it hasn't already. It's been stuck in my head ever since I woke up from this dream.

If you're into dream analysis then my dream had Roary looking for some flash, bent (or maybe hook like) gold key. He was racing about everywhere looking for it... I don't know much more than that so here's a burning question I have about the show...

What is the deal with the out of control racing action on almost every episode? All the cars drive like maniacs - even for race cars. Seriously. The only time I've ever seen a formula one style race car jump three to five feet in the air during a race was when it was crashing! For all the shows moral preaching and life lessons what is it teaching the kids about driving?

"Come on Roary! Faster son and don't slow down for the bends!"

That's enough from me. Hopefully all this blogging about Roary will have exorcised him from my head. I think he is evil. If only just a little.

    I see this was posted on 10/11/08! How come I missed out on this little gem?!! I wasn't notified about it, as I usually am! I don't remember it!

    Perhaps you could try exercising earlier in the day - there might be some better programs on - I haven't investigated - but they've probably changed now anyway! ......as long as it's not 'Here's Humphrey!'

    I didn't mind that show when you were all little! Even went racing to Westland Shopping Centre when your sister was about 2yrs old (before your time!)to take her to see him - she was in her stroller at the time - nearly got flattened in the rush.....of Mothers....to see a guy in a bear suit!

    We didn't even get the program in Whyalla, but the kids still knew about Humphrey B Bear!

    Heh, I do remember going to Westland to see Humphrey on at least one occasion.

    I don't know why you didn't spot this article. It would have been in my newsletter but you probably just missed it.

    Roary's not on in my exercise time slot anymore. Thankfully Huey's been pushed forward to 4pm and Dharma & Greg (a very funny American sitcom) is what I'm watching at the moment during my routine.

    I don't want to shift my time for exercising because I really like Judge Judy's show. It's good to be exercising whilst watching it - instead of just sitting down to watch.

US Presidential Debate 1.5 - Now with 50% Less Old Man (Thanks to The Daily Show for That Joke)

Trump and Harris both gave a clear insight into what they were about at their first Presidential debate. W hat a difference a competent opposition to Donald Trump makes. Watching the second, or first? Let's call it debate 1.5 since it's Trump's second debate and Kamala Harris' first in this US election campaign. Watching debate 1.5 my overall impression is, regardless of which candidate you support, and if you don't drill down too deep into what each actually said, both looked like they delivered a strong performance. After the debate the Left media seemed to think Donald took every piece of bait Kamala threw out, and was flustered, and even shouting at one point. I watched the whole debate and at no point did I feel Trump was shouting - no more than he would at any public rally to get his point across. He certainly never look flustered either. TV Series Review: Batman: Caped Crusader (2024) *Very Minor Spoilers*

I 'm not a huge fan of DC animation in general, despite owning a lot of their movies and TV series on DVD. It may be because they tend to stick to adaptations of the comics a little too much, or it may be that the over exaggerated action that cartoons allow makes it feel like there's never any real stakes for the characters. With that in mind, if I'm going to like anything from DC Animation it's likely to be Batman related. I recently watched the entire Batman: The Animated Series when it came to Netflix, having never seen the whole series when it originally aired. Which I'm obliged to mention since Batman: Caped Crusader is helmed by the same creator, Bruce Timm. Just like that series, Caped Crusader is set in an undisclosed time period but the look, style, and lack of tech used, even by Batman, suggests somewhere around post World War II era, possibly stretching into the 1950s. Movie Review: Madame Web (2024) *Minor Spoilers*

I 'm willing to bet a lot of people haven't seen this film, and probably will never plan to watch it. Madame Web was poorly reviewed by critics and largely ignored by audiences. For myself, I'll only see a Sony superhero movie in cinemas if Spiderman is actually in it. For everything else I can wait until it hits a streaming service I'm subscribed to. Sony's Spiderman/Marvel adjacent movies aren't actually terrible movies. They're not great movies either but I've never put one on and not watched it all the way to the end. I do find them watchable... just not really rewatchable. Madame Web is an origin story for the title character (Dakota Johnson), and three other future Spider Women (that I'm not all that familiar with) who suddenly find themselves being pursued by a dark figure with very spider-like powers. Book Review: Fourth Wing & Iron Flame - Rebecca Yarros - The Empyrean Series

I  wasn't familiar with Rebecca Yarros prior to receiving the first two books in her Empyrean Series, Fourth Wing and Iron Flame , as a gift. It's been a long time that I've read a book that I don't want to put down after the time I have to read for the day is over. These two books, which are not insignificant in size at 498 and 623 pages respectively are page turners from beginning to end (almost but I'll get to that later). Robot Uprising Update: Robot Waiter, Fasta Pasta, South Terrace, Adelaide CBD, South Australia

On the second evening of my partner, Enigma, and I's weekend stay in Adelaide we decided to have dinner at Fasta Pasta . Strangely enough our hotel staff, at the Alba, had not mentioned Fasta Pasta as an option for an evening meal while their restaurant is closed for refurbishment, even though it is literally next door on the corner of South Terrace and Pultney Street. You may be aware that Fasta Pasta is an upmarket Italian restaurant franchise with its beginnings in Adelaide. Currently they have 19 restaurants Australia wide (with the majority in South Australia - we even have one in Gawler, our home town). I've never had bad food at a Fasta Pasta, and their food never looks like a franchise meal. You always feel you're at a restaurant that's a little bit more quality than your typical hotel/motel meal.
