Dog Star Football and Fringe Benefits - Painting Again (Part 1)

In my New Years Resolutions post I said I wanted to do more painting this year and now I've finally made a start with two paintings, 'Dog Star Football' and 'Fringe Benefit'.

The keyword here is 'start'. This is the first of a series of posts and video diaries documenting the progress of these two artworks. One is destined to be my first artwork in a while that I've listed on Ebay, whilst the other will be exhibited at The Gawler Community Gallery during this coming March.

At this point I'll tell you about what inspired each artwork.

Dog Star Football

Dog Star Football - Primary colours undercoat.

Final 'Tera' Artwork.
Dog Star Football started out as one of many sketches I did trying to create a cartoon version of my brother's dog, Tera, to put on some Cafepress items and send to him as a gift for his birthday last year.

He's a follower of Australian Rules Football which prompted an idea of combining his dog with football in some way. Hence the sketch of the dog balancing a football on her tail (Tera's a female dog). See the image below.

Practice sketches for 'Tera' done last year.
Obviously the football idea didn't happen for the final design but I looked at this sketch today and thought somebody would love a painting that mixes two great loves in the one image.

Dog Star Puppy, Aug 2006
One thing you'll notice between this sketch and the painting so far is that I've added a star shaped marking around the dog's right eye. That's a homage to an artwork I did several years ago now called 'Dog Star Puppy' which featured a puppy dog with a similar star shaped marking over its right eye.

As you can see in the first image I've got as far as the base, primary colours, acrylic, underpainting that I start all my artworks with. Dog Star Football will be available to purchase on Ebay some time in early March.

Fringe Benefit

Fringe Benefit (painting on the right).

My local gallery, The Gawler Community Gallery, is holding an open exhibition in March of 2013 for anyone to create an artwork on a 12" x 12" canvas with the theme being based around the word 'Fringe'. The exhibition is being run as part of the Adelaide Fringe Festival.

As secretary of the gallery I put my hand up for designing the exhibition's promotional poster, including the featured illustration - which I always intended to paint and enter into the exhibition.

As the theme is related to the word 'fringe' and artists painting something related to the word, I took a literal approach with the idea of showing an artist painting a picture of her very nicely prettied up fringe. A 'Fringe Benefit'... I guess.

Original poster image inked
with Manga Studio EX4
Readers of my Animation and Video blog will recognize the source poster image as the one I sketched on paper first then scanned and inked digitally with Manga Studio EX4.

The image is actually a lot more detailed than what I'd usually paint so it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

As with Dog Star Football, so far I've only completed the base under painting.

The final artwork will be on display at the gallery during March 2013 and will be for sale.

If you're interested to not just read but to also see the artworks being created then below is part one of my studio, video diary documenting both artwork's creation.

  1. Good on you for having more motivation than me for your 2013 aspirations...mine at least were "think about ideas for artwork" :)

Guest Post: MY SOOPER DOOPER NEW CONSERVATORY/ART STUDIO!

Jo's new Art Studio/Conservatory. Today's guest post is by Artist, Writer, and Mental Health Advocate, Jo B Creative who writes for her blog,  Creating My Oddessey . Y ou should see our (almost) brand new conservatory, half of which is my art studio. 'Lucky me!' I think to myself. Not every creative bod can boast that. It's HUGE! Like a giant greenhouse. We first moved to our pleasant cul-de-sac house - great for raising kids - when our son, who's on the cusp of thirty-one, was four. One of the main reasons that we wanted it was that, apart from its location on the fringes of a historic market town in rural Hampshire, UK, it had a sizable conservatory looking onto the back garden. It was brown wood framed and had a corrugated transparent roof sloping down from downstairs ceiling height. On the face of it, it doesn't sound that glamourous, but we loved the idea of a conservatory. Luxury! I even liked the red brick walls which it was built against -

How to Transfer Any Line Art to Your Griptape - Easy Skateboard Griptape Art Tutorial

Dog Star Griptape Art by TET Griptape art is once again gaining popularity amongst modern skateboarders. For those of us who have tried to create our own griptape art, using paint pens, you'll know reproducing your design onto the grip, without making any mistakes is incredibly challenging. Mostly because you just have to go for it and draw the design freehand, with paint pens, directly onto the griptape. You can make the odd mistake here or there but if you get the proportions of the design completely wrong, it can be very difficult to fix. Often you just have to live with the mistake. To address the problem I've come up with an easy way anyone can transfer a line art design to their griptape, removing almost all the anxiety of getting the proportions wrong. In fact, you could do this with any line art design, even if you have no drawing skill at all. Watch the video below to see my technique in action and/or skip past the video where I highlight the basic steps to get your de

The Star Wars Saga: Episode II, Attack of the Clones *All Spoilers*

Continuing my series of posts, as one of my local TV stations shows every Star Wars movie in order, every Saturday, for the next six weeks leading up to the release of Star Wars, Episode VII, The Force Awakens , here is my response to and thoughts on  Star Wars, Episode II, Attack of the Clones . After The Phantom Menace I just wasn't interested in seeing Episode II in the cinema. I don't think I made any effort to see it or even had any anticipation for it's release.

The Braille Skateboarding App - How it Changed My Mind on Switch Skating

My Profile on the Braille Skateboarding App. Braille Skateboarding launched it's new Skateboarding App worldwide on November 23rd, 2020. About a month prior to that they did a 'soft launch' via email for anyone living in Australia. I'm guessing this was to give the app a final test in the real world before launching it proper. Rather than explain what it is, watch Aaron Kyro, founder of Braille Skateboarding, run you through the app in the launch video below.  In a nutshell the app is virtually everything Braille has to offer accessed right from your phone, from tutorials to the Braille Army Community. The app is free but you can unlock more features if you upgrade to a paid membership. Braille App Trick List. One of the apps unique free features is keeping track of the tricks you've learned and giving you an overall score so you have some way to measure your progression. There is an extensive list of tricks, covering all types of skateboarding, categorized by diff

Boom Crash Opera Born Classic But Not Again

Boom Crash Opera are an Australian Band that reached the peak of their popularity in the mid to late nineteen eighties. They are a band that I knew about at that time but was never really excited by until they released their ill fated double album Born and Born Again in 1995 (Album cover pictured). At the time of its release I was very much into emerging Australian musical acts and was also looking out for new sounds that were different and had kind of a futuristic/electronic sound. Artists that I was buying at the time included; Swoop , Nine Inch Nails and Pop Will Eat Its Self . As well as a really interesting release by David Bowie, the concept album, Outside . Born was a fairly radical departure for Boom Crash Opera (BCO). The first single, Gimme , was often compared to the sounds of Gary Glitter, particularly his single, Rock n Roll part 2 , because of the pounding drum loops. Watch the video below. My favorite single from the album is dissemble which probably went now

Course Review: YouTube for Bosses - Sunny Lenarduzzi. How to grow your YouTube Channel into a Business

YouTube for Bosses Free Mug...  or the most expensive mug  you'll ever buy? I've been subscribed to  Sunny Lenarduzzi's YouTube channel for a few years, learning a lot on how to grow a following on sites like YouTube and Instagram. If you have any interest in growing your own YouTube channel I'd highly recommend watching some of Sunny's videos on the subject.  Definitely explore her 2019 back catalogue for the most useful information. This year she's been on a bit of a 'being authentic' pivot that, personally, doesn't resonate all that much with me (but probably speaks volumes to anyone with similar experience). I'm not saying she shouldn't or isn't being authentic, it's just I didn't subscribe to hear stories about her life journey. To get back on track, Sunny runs a successful online business with her flagship course, YouTube for Bosses , a stand alone paid course that does act as something of a gateway to further paid (but opt

One Week on Light n' Easy #lightneasy

My partner, Enigma, and I recently decided to try Light n' Easy to replace all our daily meals in an effort to eat healthier (and not have to think at all about cooking evening meals). Enigma is about to embark on her third week of their full menu but I caved after one and opted just to get the dinners.
