| Cat Amongst the Pigeons by TET 2026-02-22 Original Acrylic Painting on Canvas (15.5" x 12"). |
In my previous post, Painting Whimsical Cats (and probably other stuff) Again After Almost a Decade Away From Traditional Art, I, obviously, mentioned I'm painting cats again. It wasn't an empty promise. As you can see I've created my first official, new cat painting - since the previous one was actually a test piece - titled Cat Amongst the Pigeons.
This painting features two firsts; the first time I've painted a cat with pigeons, and the first time I've broken the edge of my white border with the image. (In case I'm not explaining that well, the cat's ears extend into the white border that is usually masked off with tape during painting). I just didn't want to clip the cat's ears!

What Does It Mean?
While this can mean anything you want it to mean, I was thinking more about what I'm trying to do with my cat paintings, given I'm not really a cat person.
The broader theme of them all is 'fun optimism'. They're not really about cats. However, if you've ever watched a cat at play, they tend to have an optimism that they can do almost anything. Catch that butterfly, make that particularly long or high jump etc.
Failing is only a minor set back from which they quickly recover with a "I meant to do that" can't of swagger.
In this new image, I imagine this cat might normally go after pigeons, but he's thinking, "Not today... I could, but not today. Today we're all just going to get along."
Who knows what the pigeons are thinking? Maybe they're just waiting to see which way this encounter is going to go?

More Paintings to Come
I'm not painting to any kind of schedule this time around. Each painting takes as long as it takes. When it's done, I'll start a new one. My goal is to always have something on the go. If you'd like to be notified of new paintings subscribe to this blog's newsletter or, if you're on Facebook, maybe follow my TET Life Page where you'll see behind the scenes work in progress photos as I post them.
