Australian Federal Election 2025 - World's Most Boring Government Re-elected by Landside - We're Even More Fine!

When I started writing about the 2025 Federal election the polls were suggesting the world's most boring government was crusing to a defeat. As it turns out, boring is good, and Australia wants more of it, handing the current government a landslide win with a majority vote.

Anthony Albanese became the first PM since John Howard to win a consecutive term, and the first Labor PM since Bob Hawke to do so. Some of that comes down to the leadership revolving door both major parties had through the mid 2000s.

Although Anthony is my preferred PM over Dutton the irony is Dutton sounds more like a leader with a fairly commanding voice and an ability to speak well, without sounding like he's waffling and dodging questions, even if he is.

Anthony, on the other hand, does have the ability (and speech writer) to say a lot of inspiring things but it gets lost in the delivery. He doesn't seem to know when to emphasise a point for effect.

In his victory speech he said a lot of good things but the only thing that stood out is when he chided the audience when they started to be disrespectful at the first mention of Peter Dutton. Anthony squashed that right away and reminded everyone that we treat our opponents respectfully in Australia. 

Peter didn't have a great night of it. Not only did his party decisively lose, he lost his own seat, that he's held for twenty five years. Which is kind of a shame, just because he is one of the party's better politicians.

However, one thing people said about him during the campaign is that he listens. If this is true then he really needed to listen to a study back in 2016 by the South Australian government investigating the possibility of establishing a commercial nuclear waste storage facility in out state.

The intention was to use the facility as a revenue stream by charging other countries, without such facilities, to store their waste. I believe the whole idea was shot down and we never heard about it again.

I don't know if the Coalition's policy on starting a nuclear energy industry in Australia lost them votes, but Labor certainly focused their campaign on how it was a bad idea. Interestingly they focused on the cost of building seven plants, and how little impact it would have in reducing the cost of power when it would service just 4% of the grid.

For me the nuclear power issue is a deal breaker. I will never knowingly support any party or individual that wants to bring nuclear power to this country so long as nuclear waste still takes a ridiculously stupid number of years to break down to safe levels.

Introducing nuclear power would require us to build nuclear waste storage facilities. Once we have storage facilities it makes total sense to use them to store waste from other countries, creating a new revenue stream for government and investors. It has nothing at all to do with reducing power costs, or even being carbon neutral.

Waste storage facilities may be safe when they're new but they're a problem for future generations whose great, great, great grandparents haven't been born yet. That is irresponsible. Ramping up the amount of waste being produced for quick money now is extremely short sighted. The waste becomes future humankind's problem, we won't be here.

Fix that problem and maybe I'll be on board... though reactor meltdowns aren't great either.

The word's most boring government continues. I think, as predicted, minor parties and independents gained a few more seats but they won't hold the balance of power. Good for them (if you're wondering my first preferences went to the  Greens, because I'm not put off by males with purple hair or nose piercings), but they won't have as much influence as they would've liked thanks to the swing against the coalition.

Some are saying this election was a rejection of Trump style politics, with slogans over substance. I certainly hope so. 

Trump and his yes people are the worst. They have no place running anything. It's hard to be respectful towards them when their actions clearly show they have no respect for anyone who doesn't agree with them, and no empathy for people caught up on the wrong side of their policies, despite doing nothing to deserve what they're going through.
